The fifth edition is looking for Indian beauty brands and ideas, with US$500,000 in prizes plus mentorship, retail opportunities and industry exposure.

Indian beauty entrepreneurs with a new product, an emerging brand or an idea still in development can now apply for the fifth edition of the BEAUTY&YOU India Awards. The programme is designed to identify entrepreneurs and innovators working on ideas that could contribute to the next phase of India’s beauty industry.

The initiative, created by The Estée Lauder Companies with Nykaa and Startup India, is open to both businesses already selling their products and concepts that have not yet entered the market. This gives founders at different stages an opportunity to present their work and access resources that can help take their ideas further.

One of the biggest draws this year is the US$500,000 total prize pool, which is spread across five award categories. Financial support is accompanied by opportunities that could be particularly useful to young beauty businesses, including mentorship from industry professionals, potential distribution through Nykaa.com, support from the Startup India platform and exposure in Indian and international media.

The awards cover several areas of beauty entrepreneurship. Applicants can put forward existing beauty concepts, pre-launch ideas, breakthrough innovations, creative collaborations and fragrance concepts. The programme also has a category dedicated to recognising women entrepreneurs.

For founders, the opportunity is not limited to developing another beauty product. The awards are looking at ideas that bring something distinctive to the category, whether through a product, formulation, technology, consumer experience or business approach.

A compelling application therefore needs to establish the idea clearly. Entrepreneurs should be able to explain who the product or concept is meant for, what consumer requirement it addresses and what makes it different from what is already available. Those with businesses already in the market can demonstrate existing traction, while pre-launch founders can focus on the opportunity, proposition and plans for taking the concept forward.

Choosing the right category is the first step. Applicants then need to review the requirements applicable to that category and build their submission around their concept, its potential and their entrepreneurial vision. Any supporting information requested as part of the application should also be provided before the stipulated deadline.

The programme arrives at a time when India’s beauty sector is seeing increasing activity from independent entrepreneurs across skincare, makeup, fragrance and other areas. For these businesses, access to established industry expertise and retail networks can be an important step between developing an idea and building a sustainable brand.

That is where BEAUTY&YOU India could offer value beyond its prize money. The combination of funding, mentorship, potential retail distribution and visibility gives selected entrepreneurs access to several parts of the beauty ecosystem at once.
