  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Wear gloves especially when cleaning or have a direct contact with harsh chemicals

Nail care routine

Asha Hariharan recommends a nail care routine for healthy nails for men too.

  • Trim nails regularly and keep them short
  • File nails straight across with an emery board to prevent snags
  • Clean nails thoroughly with soap and water, scrubbing the underside
  • Gently push back cuticles using a cuticle pusher

For professional nail care, Asha suggests, “Choose a reputable nail salon with proper hygiene practices and opt for gentle manicures and pedicures, avoiding excessive cuticle cutting.”

Diet, supplements and nail strengthening treatments for men

  • Balanced diet with adequate protein from sources like eggs, fish, and lean meat
  • Include foods rich in biotin (vitamin B7) like nuts, seeds, and whole grains
  • Consume vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables to promote nail health
  • Consider taking a multivitamin with added biotin if dietary intake is insufficient

Age and its impact on nail health

With age, the growth of the fingernails and toenails tends to slow down. Change of protein in the nail plate makes nails brittle and prone to splitting. Discolouration and thickening are also common,” adds Asha. “As we age people are unable to cut their own toenails as they are unabe to reach their feet, lack finger dexterity to the point they are unable to use the clippers, or get dizzy when bending, or have visual impairment and thick toenails.”

Nails can change colour due to various factors like infection, health conditions or injury. It is important to pay attention to these signs and take proper care for healthy nails.
