Avon Products, a renowned global beauty company has filed for bankruptcy after facing lawsuits for its talcum powder causing cancer in people. The court has alleged that the brand uses a mineral in its talcum powder and eye shadows that is linked to cancer. Avon has faced about 200 lawsuits in recent years that accuse the brand of having talc products with asbestos, a carcinogen. The company’s financial stability has been significantly impacted by these legal challenges, forcing it to seek bankruptcy relief.
In December 2022, Avon was directed to pay a sum of USD 50 million to a woman from Arizona who claimed that she got cancer after using Avon’s cosmetic products that had talc with asbestos. In July 2024, a man from Chicago area who was a janitor at Avon’s manufacturing plant in Illinois was given USD 24.4 million after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma. These verdicts, preceded Johnson & Johnson USD 6.5 billion settlement earlier in 2024 that claimed their baby powder caused ovarian cancer.

However, both the brands have denied all these claims. Avon said that they use only cosmetic grade talc which has been thoroughly tested and is devoid of asbestos. The company faces significant legal challenges and financial burdens stemming from these allegations.
According to John Dubel, Chair of Avon Products, filing for bankruptcy will ensure that that their assets get maximum value and they can fulfill all their obligations. Avon CEO Kristof Neirynck added that now the brand will focus on improving global strategy such as advancing the direct selling model and push the brand towards growth.
