Hindustan Unilever Limited has inaugurated the Unilever Fragrance Hub in Mumbai, establishing India as the company’s third global fragrance innovation centre after the United Kingdom and the United States. Located at the IIT Bombay campus, the facility forms part of Unilever’s broader 100 million euro investment programme focused on advanced fragrance creation powered by artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

The hub represents a significant milestone in India’s growing importance within Unilever’s global research and development ecosystem. With its diverse consumer preferences, varied climatic conditions, and rapidly evolving lifestyle trends, India offers a uniquely rich environment for developing fragrances that can be adapted and scaled across international markets.

At the core of the facility is a sophisticated blend of consumer insights, advanced scientific research, and AI-powered formulation tools. Real-time evaluation systems and digital-first product development capabilities are expected to significantly reduce fragrance development timelines, enabling faster and more responsive product launches across categories including shampoos, body washes, deodorants, and personal care.

The launch aligns closely with Unilever’s global premiumisation strategy, as fragrance increasingly emerges as a key differentiator in consumer purchasing decisions. By strengthening its fragrance capabilities in India, HUL is positioning itself to enhance premium product offerings, deepen brand preference, and support sustainable margin expansion across its portfolio.

The facility will also foster collaboration between industry and academia, working closely with researchers and institutions to advance fragrance science, data analytics, and innovation methodologies.

The inauguration follows Unilever CEO Fernando Fernandez’s remarks at the 2026 dbAccess Global Consumer Conference, where he reaffirmed India’s role as an exponential growth opportunity for the coming decade. With Unilever holding dominant positions across India’s haircare, skincare, and personal care markets, the Fragrance Hub further cements the country’s position as a strategic centre for the company’s long-term innovation ambitions.
