Richard Ashforth’s journey through the world of hairdressing has been defined by a deep appreciation for art, a commitment to innovation, and a passion for the craft that continues to inspire on a global scale.
He studied art and art history before starting his hair career in Sheffield, UK, which led him to hone his craft at the legendary Vidal Sassoon in London. Over the next 18 years, Richard immersed himself in the Sassoon philosophy, honing a unique signature defined by simplicity, precision, and futuristic design. He progressed from education, to launching Saco; a visceral underground hair show – NOISE, editorial work with top fashion magazines and, a 5th time nomination for British Hairdresser of the Year 2025! Today, life has turned full circle as Richard returns to Vidal Sassoon as International Creative Director.
He had recently assumed charge at Sassoon when I met him at the HAIR By SchwarzkopfPro Show in Mumbai, where he presented outstanding creative work on-stage with colleague Matt Carroll-Grub. It was a pleasure to have an opportunity to ask him about his career and thoughts on education.
Sandhya Chipalkatti: How does your recent appointment make you feel?
Richard Ashforth: It is a great honour and privilege to follow in the footsteps of an elite group of inspirational icons who have led this business-continuing Vidal’s legacy. I carry the immense responsibility of preserving and advancing this heritage for the next generation.
SC: You’ve had quite a journey – from a rookie hairdresser in Sheffield, to where
you are today. What were the key turning points?
RA: I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors throughout my career. A key turning point came when I saw a Sassoon collection in a magazine – a true lightbulb moment that inspired me to pursue a career here. Sassoon provided me with a fantastic education, opportunities to travel, and meet many remarkable people. In the early 2000s, I embarked on a new chapter by opening my own business – a huge learning curve that spanned 20 years. Now, I’m returning to my spiritual home, ready to challenge myself once again.
SC: You are known for your outstanding creativity and precision. Is
that instinctive, or your training? What inspires you?
RA: Mastering the fundamentals gives you the freedom to push boundaries. The education I received laid the foundation for me to become the strongest hairdresser I could be. I’m most inspired by people and their individuality. Art, music, fashion, and literature also influence me. Inspiration can be found in many places if you stay open to it.
SC: Your successes and challenges?
RA: Owning my business showed me that while opening the doors is a significant challenge, the real success lies in the journey that follows. Returning to Sassoon feels like a milestone – an achievement that brings both pride and a promise of fresh challenges.
SC: Hair fashion is trending. Where is hairdressing as a profession today?
RA: Hairdressing as a profession is evolving rapidly on a global scale. It’s moving toward a renewed emphasis on technical skill and precision, especially in cutting, while embracing creativity and innovation. Hairdressers are becoming more open-minded and adaptable, thriving on change and new trends, which ensures the craft stays fresh and relevant worldwide.
SC: In your opinion, how can hairdressing standards across the globe ‘level up’?
RA: I believe the key to levelling up hairdressing standards globally lies in investing in
education. Unlocking true potential comes from mastering the basics and continually developing skills. At Sassoon, we are deeply passionate about education-equipping people with the knowledge and techniques they need to elevate the profession worldwide.
SC: The Schwarzkopf Professional X Sassoon collaboration was announced during your show in Mumbai. How will it benefit Indian colourists and stylists?
RA: The Schwarzkopf Professional X Sassoon collaboration brings together the strengths of two
iconic houses that complement each other perfectly. Schwarzkopf Professional’s exceptional colour products combined with Sassoon’s cutting-edge skills create a powerful partnership.
SC: How did it feel presenting the ‘Lived in’ Trend to some of the top hairdressers in India?
RA: It was a great privilege to share the stage and present the ‘Lived In’ trend to some of India’s top hairdressers. The show was filled with incredible looks and exciting Trends like #Lived-in Mocha #Lived-in Toffee, making it an inspiring experience.
SC: What changes can we expect at Sassoon now, with you as International Creative Director
RA: I’m committed to upholding all the core values of Sassoon while working closely with an incredible team to strengthen the creative foundation of the business. We’ll continue to celebrate the brand’s rich heritage while harnessing the full range of our team’s skills to develop exciting trends that shape the future of hairdressing.
