TikTok has a chokehold on the world of makeup and there’s no denying it. Last year, the world of makeup saw a breakthrough with viral trends like the ‘clean girl aesthetic’, ‘French girl aesthetic’ and some food-inspired makeup. From Iced Latte inspired bronzed skin to Strawberry inspired dewy blush look, these TikTok trends dominated the beauty industry for the entirety of 2023. But if there is one thing that we know about these makeup trends, it is that they are ever-changing.
Being the torchbearer of all the raging trends seen in this industry, TikTok changed the landscape of the beauty world once again in 2024 by bringing a fresh set of makeup trends for the world to obsess over. Here, StyleSpeak takes you to a trip down the memory lane by rounding up this year’s’s most viral TikTok makeup trends.
Broccoli Freckles
This year, TikTok creators didn’t just eat their vegetables in 2024, they wore it as well! TikTok took the food-inspired makeup to the next level by using broccoli florets as an applicator to create faux freckles on the cheeks. With nothing but a broccoli bud and a bronzer, makeup enthusiasts across the world gave themselves the perfect, naturally warm sun-kissed look in no time by applying a cream or powdered bronzer on top of a broccoli floret before stamping it on the face.
Sunset Blush
This year saw the blush at the forefront of all the viral trends. From the ‘boyfriend blush’ to the ‘Lavender Haze’, each blush placement got its own moment of fame on TikTok. But if there was one blush trend that has been a total head turner, it was this year’s Sunset Blush. A viral trend coined after makeup artists blended shades of orange and pink on their cheekbones, this trend captured the hues of a vacation sunset perfectly by giving the high points of the cheek a bright, naturally flushed look.
Pearl Skin
Heavily inspired by the milky lustre of a pearl, the Pearl Skin trend was a spin on the viral Glass Skin by adding a touch of ‘quiet luxury’ to it. This TikTok trend saw makeup enthusiasts achieve a full face of pearl-like dewy sheen by applying ethereal shades of champagne and taupe on the cheekbones, forehead as well as the arches above the brows, giving it an iridescent, summery look.
Y3K Makeup
Taking a trip to the futuristic year of 3000, the Y3K makeup was a total 180-degree to the raging Y2K trend that the beauty world was obsessed with just a while ago. Inspired by space, technology and the chemicals, the Y3K makeup trend saw unconventional shapes, metallic hues and glittery tones all through the year.
The Rockstar Goth
This year’s trend saw the soft Goth take a backseat as the edgy Rockstar Goth look took the wheel. Executed in pure black, the Rockstar goth saw punk-inspired bold lips, dishevelled hair, smudgy black eyeshadows, sculpted cheekbones and thick, wonky graphic liners.
Blurred Lips
Also known as the Blotted Lips, this trend caused a whirlwind on BeautyTok this year. A popular Korean lip style, the Blurred Lips were achieved with water-tinted lip balms and glosses. As the name suggests, the entire trend revolved around softening the lip lines in a way where the pigment was at its brightest in the centre of the lips while gradually fading outwards.
Feathered Brows
Inspired by a bird’s feathers, the viral Feathered Brows were created by giving the natural brows an airy, textured look by using a spoolie to lift the eyebrow hair up. The trend helped give the brows a defined, wispy feather look, making them look naturally thick and arched.
3D Lashes
With TikTok birthing new beauty trends every day, the app is on a steady rise to becoming the most sought after hub for makeup related knowledge and discovery by beauty professionals across the globe. From Popsiclesque Lips to Gothic Eyes, this year saw TikTok catering to every aesthetic, ensuring there is something for everyone.
