Taj Wellington Mews Chennai, South Asia’s first luxury serviced residence run entirely by women, has earned the rare EDGE Zero Carbon Certification, marking a major milestone in sustainable hospitality. This recognition, awarded under IFC’s global EDGE framework, positions the property as the first of its kind in the region to reach this level of sustainability performance. The achievement also reflects the broader environmental goals outlined in IHCL’s ESG+ initiative, Paathya.
To qualify for the certification, the hotel first attained EDGE Advanced status by surpassing key efficiency thresholds, including over 40% energy savings and more than 20% reductions in both water use and the embodied energy of materials. Building on these benchmarks, the residence demonstrated net-zero on-site carbon emissions, a requirement for the Zero Carbon distinction. This underscores the property’s efforts to incorporate efficient systems, responsible construction methods, and long-term green operating practices.
In response to the certification, General Manager Mandeep Kaur shared that the accomplishment reinforces the team’s ongoing efforts to blend sustainability with luxury hospitality and that it motivates them to continue elevating their environmental commitments while delivering the signature warmth associated with the Taj brand.
EDGE stands for Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies, an internationally recognised certification system developed by the International Finance Corporation. It provides a measurable pathway for buildings to reduce resource consumption and meet global environmental standards. Administered by Sintali, the authorised certifying body, EDGE aligns with several respected sustainability frameworks such as GRESB, ICMA, CBI, and CDP, giving the certification strong credibility across global markets.
With this distinction, Taj Wellington Mews Chennai strengthens its position as a leader in environmentally responsible hospitality, demonstrating how luxury can go hand in hand with meaningful climate action.
