The slicked-back bun has become a go-to hairstyle across trends, embraced by fans of both polished aesthetics and practical hair days. Its sleek finish offers a clean sculpted appearance while cleverly hiding oily roots. Although celebrities like Sofia Richie have helped popularise the look recently, the true experts of the style are ballet dancers, who have worn it long before it became a trend.
Jill Ogai, Principal Artist with The Australian Ballet, has styled her hair in tight buns or French rolls for years. For performances, she uses strong-hold products to ensure her hair stays in place. However, this consistent styling has caused challenges over time. She shared that during her youth, wearing her hair in the same tight bun daily led to hair thinning at the centre of her hairline. She explained that this approach is common among dancers who fear their hairstyle might loosen during a show.
According to Chelcey Salinger, Director of the International Association of Trichologists, this kind of hair loss isn’t limited to dancers. She explained that traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by constant tension, is a real risk for anyone who wears tight ponytails, braids, or extensions regularly.
To reduce this risk, Chelcey recommends easing the tension in slick hairstyles. Instead of pulling hair too tightly, she suggests relying on styling products to maintain a neat finish. Jill echoes this advice, noting that hydrated strands, classic hair gel, and a fine-tooth comb can create a sleek effect without excessive tugging.
Letting hair down whenever possible also helps, Chelcey adds, as hair benefits from being free and relaxed. She also stresses the importance of regular scalp cleansing, even in winter to avoid product and oil build-up.
Jill’s haircare regimen includes two to three washes a week, with additional washes during intense performance periods. She uses clarifying shampoos to remove buildup and follows up with hydrating treatments. At night, she applies hair oil and lets her hair dry naturally, calling the routine both nourishing and soothing.
