Manipur has been in the line of fire for many months, which has adversely affected its economy. Beauty salons have also faced the backlash of it and especially the ones run by transgenders.
Work options for transgenders have always been difficult but salons ensured robust earnings and a safe place bereft of discrimination. However, the ongoing violence has left most of the salon owners no options other than to shut shop or offer home services.
According to Santa Khurai, a trans activist, trans women are huge players in the beauty industry and the shutting of salons has been a big blow for them. Initially, the pandemic hit them hard in 2020 and 2021 with no earnings and they had to survive on savings for a long period. The violence in Manipur has only increased their problems.
