The union territory of Ladakh is making a bid to become a prominent wellness destination in the country by promoting its traditional Sowa-Rigpa system of medicine. To achieve this goal, the Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and the Deputy Commissioner, Santosh Sukhadeve, inaugurated a Sowa-Rigpa based wellness week event at the Organic Retreat in the Nubra valley.
The event, organized jointly by LEDeG, Stonehedge, and Sorig Foundation, aims to showcase and promote Sowa-Rigpa wellness products, including body treatments, meditation sessions, and consultations by Amchi practitioners. Sowa-Rigpa, also known as Amchi system of medicine, is one of the oldest and most well-documented medical traditions in the world.
The Deputy Commissioner expressed that Ladakh aspires to establish a reputation similar to Kerala’s recognition for Ayurveda but in the context of Sowa-Rigpa wellness practices. The week-long event includes meditation sessions, Sowa-Rigpa training, rejuvenating body treatments, and a workshop focusing on wellness tourism.
Specialists from Dharamsala have been brought in to conduct training sessions on Sowa-Rigpa therapies, enriching the event with expert knowledge. LAHDC Deputy Chairman Tsering Angchuk emphasized the potential for village-based wellness initiatives and highlighted Panamik as a prime location for dedicated wellness development due to its natural hot springs. Utilization of these hot springs for Sowa-Rigpa therapy presents a unique opportunity to showcase Panamik as a wellness destination.
