Decoding the ‘Korean Glass Skin’ Treatment
Korean beauty is trending around the world. This explains why the Korean beauty industry which was about USD 5.8 bn. in 2021 is estimated to become USD 21 bn. by 2026. K Beauty’s popular ‘Glass Skin’ is the talk of the town in India. This has boosted the demand for not only products, but also the much-in-demand ‘Korean Glass Skin Facial’.
The StyleSpeak Beauty Conference 2024 invited Dr. Noopur Jain, Founder and Consultant Dermatologist, Skinzest Clinic to de-mystify the popular ‘Korean Glass Skin Facial Treatment’. Speaking with the attending delegates Dr. Noopur Jain delved deep into the concept of Korean Glass Skin and the methodology of the ‘Korean Glass Skin Facial Treatment’. We bring you the excerpts of Dr. Noopur’s talk and Demo from the Conference proceedings.
The K Beauty advantage
Korean skin is very different from Indian skin as they are genetically blessed with clear complexion, lighter skin, less pigmentation and less pores. This is why genetically, they have an advantage over Indians.
Korean skincare practices are also very different from that of the Indians. According to Dr. Noopur Jain, “In India we are now waking up to the importance of skincare. Nowadays a lot of patients come to me to know about the skincare routine, which is a new trend. Earlier people visited the dermatologists only when they had skin problems.”
This is not so in Korea. They start very early with their skincare practices and their 8-10 step skincare routine is a reality. They are very particular about their AM routine, PM routine and don’t shy away from skin treatments, whereas in India it is still a taboo. “Even if Indians are getting things done they don’t want to talk about it because they feel that people will say things about them.”
Koreans are more preventive and start early with the right skincare treatments without waiting for skin issues to start occurring. It’s more preventive with them so that the skin barrier is protected and the skin is healthy from inside. Their skin treatments begin at a very early age. Moreover, Korean skin treatments are much more advanced and plastic surgery is also big in Korea compared to India.
K Skincare ingredients
Another aspect the Koreans are to be merited for are their skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ginseng. These have been made popular by Koreans. They try to use as many natural ingredients as possible and also those superior to what Indians use.
So what is Korean glass skin?
“We are basically comparing skin to glass. Glass is luminous. It is shiny and has a dewy appearance. It is flawless and glowing. This is what we see on social media. But we need to understand a lot of it is related to the lighting, the filters and to the makeup and healthy hydrated skin from inside.”
Understanding the Korean glass facial
- There is no set protocol for Korean Glass Facial: The end result is to achieve the dewy luminous look. However the steps followed will differ from doctor to doctor or cosmetologist to cosmetologist. Every skin is different and needs to be treated differently. Importantly, Indian skin is different from Korean skin.
- It works on all skin types: This is not true. If the client has an oily skin it needs to be treated differently. If the client has sensitive skin, products for oily skin cannot be used. Similarly dry skin requires a different protocol and combination or pigmented skin would require a different protocol. The facial has to be tweaked according to the concerns like acne, marks, pigmentation of the client.
- Results will vary on Indian and Korean skin: The results of Korean skin facial will differ on Indian skin. It will react differently on Indian skin. Set the expectation right for the client. It is not possible to achieve the same look as the Korean skin.
Essential steps of Korean Glass Facial
Dr. Noopur’s talk was followed by a 30 min Korean Glass Facial Demo using a Hydra Facial Machine following these steps.
- Like any facial, begin with cleansing. It has to be done properly. Preferably do a double cleanse to remove oil and dirt and then use a water-based cleanser. This step is important because if not done properly, the serums won’t get infused properly.
- Secondly, exfoliate to achieve a smooth texture. It helps remove dead skin cells and can be done through several methods like chemical or physical exfoliation. Exfoliate gently because once the dead skin cells are removed the skin is much more smoother.
- Infuse the hydrating serums: Korean glass facial helps to get the skin hydrated and only then the skin will glow. Hydrated skin helps to achieve glow and the skin gets a luminous glass like glow.
