Top products, trendy services, and a city retreat are the offerings of the newly opened Apple Unisex Salon in Mumbai
Acareer shift from IT to beauty might be rare, but that is the path taken by Komal Borude, Director of Apple Unisex Salon. The 25-year-old took over the reins of the business from her mother-in-law Kavita Borude three years ago. StyleSpeak had the opportunity to visit Apple Unisex Salon at their newest location on Linking Road in Bandra, Mumbai, their first foray outside Pune. Wanting to know all about their latest venture, we spoke with Komal Borude, Director, Apple Unisex Salon at length about the salon concept and plans. She invited the team to experience the salon’s services first-hand.
SALON INTERIORS
Apple Unisex Salon Mumbai blends elegance with a natural feel with its muted and calming design. Natural light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows, brightening the reception area. The hair section features nine hair stations and three backwashes, delightfully automated for maximum comfort. Perhaps the highlight of the salon is the pedicure area with two stations, backed by a faux green wall, reminiscent of a nature retreat instead of a busy city salon. Three spacious beauty rooms follow. While the cream walls, lighted mirrors, high-quality brown leather furniture, and overall sleek design give the salon a modern and soothing aesthetic, it is the little artistic touches like the murals accent and lend colour to the space.

PRODUCT RANGE
Apple Unisex Salon prides itself on their use of top-notch professional products for their clientele. “At Apple Unisex Salon, we use and recommend top-tier products from brands like L’Oréal, Schwarzkopf, and Moroccan for hair care, as well as Dermalogica for skincare. These products are chosen for their proven effectiveness and quality, ensuring that our clients receive the best possible care during their treatments,” Komal adds.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
Komal describes a two-pronged strategy to hiring, training and retaining quality staff. This includes a “rigorous hiring process that includes multiple interviews and practical skill assessments” during hiring, as well as “continuous education and professional development”. The staff in every department of the salon was very well trained with considerable service experience.
THE EXPERIENTIAL
My experiential hair treatment at Apple Unisex Salon started with a hair consultation with stylist Amit More. The Schwarzkopf Fiber Clinix treatment was recommended for my curly hair. The results? My normally unmanageable hair was smoother, stronger, and marginally less prone to frizz, despite Mumbai’s humid weather! In terms of nails, the Café H & L Pedicure Kit was in order, and my calluses, corns, and dead skin were exfoliated away. My feet felt considerably cleaner and softer for several days. Lastly, the detanning face treatment using the O3 detanning kit, resulted in soothed skin and fading of the vacation tan.
The entire salon team and the stylists were helpful, experienced and open to not only answering our questions, but also explaining the processes and the science which the treatments were based on. They pointed out that they would never recommend treatments which were not necessary.
FUTURE PLANS
In our conversation with salon manager Arpana and Director Komal, both mentioned that expansion plans were in the works for Apple Unisex Salon. Their long-term plans include up to ten more salons in Mumbai. Komal adds “In the short term, we plan to expand our service offerings and introduce new treatments to keep up with the latest beauty trends.”
