Behind the scenes of Richardson’s iconic nail designs is Kinaya Haug, a talented nail artist who has been making waves in the industry with her unique creations. Haug’s journey began when she was hired to create nails for Richardson at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in 2023. Her design wasn’t initially chosen by Richardson, Haug saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow. “I was a little disappointed, but I got to put the press-ons on her, which was amazing,” Haug says. This experience not only allowed Haug to apply her skills but also gave her the chance to connect with Richardson and understand her style.
Fast forward to the 2024 Olympic Trials, where Haug had the opportunity to create three different nail sets for Richardson. But that was just the beginning – Haug was also hired by Nike to host a nail bar for all competing athletes, further solidifying her position as a go-to nail artist for elite athletes. For Haug, working with Richardson is not only a career highlight but also a cultural one: “Nails are deeply rooted in Black history, and Black women are the pillars for creating all of these different nail trends and styles,” she says.
Haug’s collaboration with Richardson showcases the power of art and creativity in sports. When asked about working with Richardson, Haug gushes about her client’s warmth and creativity: “She’s very welcoming and very sweet. I love to work with her. I love her creativity and what she stands for.” For Haug, this partnership represents more than just a successful collaboration – it’s a symbol of representation and inclusivity in an industry often dominated by white beauty standards.
As Haug looks to the future, she has set her sights on becoming one of the leading nail techs that Olympians can go to. “The big goal is to be one of the leading nail techs that Olympians can go to,” she says. “To be able to express art, particularly for Black women, in these spaces where their health and beauty are prioritized is where I belong.” With her talent, creativity, and passion for inclusivity, Kinaya Haug is poised to make a lasting impact on the world of nail art and beyond.
