Dr Vishal Gabale, a doctor at Navi Mumbai hospital, stated on an Instagram video in April that the popular beauty treatment – threading- risks Hepatitis B infection. He referred to reports of three young women who tested positive after undergoing this cosmetic procedure at the same salon.
However, a look into his posts reveals that there is no substantial evidence to support these assertions. His own caption reveals the case is theoretical for educational purposes and derived from findings in medical literature that propose certain conclusions. Medical experts spoke to news media, pointing out the lack of documented cases of anyone contracting Hepatitis B after visiting a salon. Dr C Madhavi, a dermatologist from Hyderabad, noted that in theory, the Hepatitis virus could be transmitted through cuts or openings in the skin; if the threading procedure is harsh enough, it possibly could lead to an infection.
However, the dermatologist stresses there hasn’t been a documented case or complaint from any person. Following the viral video from Dr Gabale, other videos echoing the dangers of threading to health were passed around on social media. Consumers are encouraged to be wary of medical professionals or others acting as health influencers spreading warnings not based on authentic reports or medical observations.
