In today’s fast-paced world, sleep has become a precious commodity, especially when traveling. Global hotel brand Sofitel has taken a proactive approach to addressing this issue, partnering with researchers at Paris City University to delve deeper into the science of sleep and develop innovative solutions to enhance guest experiences. The study, published in the Journal of Sleep Disorders and Therapy, focused on minimizing the “first-night effect” – a common occurrence when sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings. Sofitel identified this as a significant concern, given that 45% of its guests only stay for one night.

Creating the Ideal Sleep Environment

To optimize sleep quality, Sofitel’s researchers meticulously designed a special sleep room. This space featured a luxurious MyBed experience, complete with a box spring mattress, topper, comforter, and an extensive selection of pillows. Beyond the bedding, the room incorporated a range of factors known to influence sleep.

Pre-Sleep Rituals: Meditation sessions, herbal tea, and essential oil pillow spray to promote relaxation.

Sensory Enhancements: Lip balm, warm socks, a silk sleep mask, calming white and pink noise, and an optimal room temperature of 18˚C.

Noise Reduction: Silicone earplugs to minimize distractions.

The Results Speak for Themselves

The study’s findings were impressive. Participants who slept in the specially designed Sofitel room experienced a 13.7% improvement in sleep quality compared to their home environments. They also enjoyed 65 minutes of extra shut-eye and were more likely to fall asleep within 30 minutes.
