Celebrating four decades of innovation, Malibu C reflects on its journey from a modest family venture in a Malibu garage to a trailblazing name in hair and skin care. Founded in 1985 by Tom Porter and his wife, Deb, the company became the first to harness the power of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to address a range of hair, scalp, and skin concerns.

From the outset, Malibu C prioritized education, targeting salon professionals to explain the damaging effects of oxidation and the benefits of antioxidants. As the internet evolved, so did the brand’s outreach. Malibu C developed one of the beauty industry’s first websites and an Affiliate Portal, extending its educational reach globally.

Relocating to Indianapolis in the 1990s, Malibu C expanded its facilities from 15,000 to over 100,000 square feet. Today, its operations span four buildings, encompassing manufacturing, warehousing, labs, and training centers.

A leader in sustainability, Malibu C introduced EcoBlu packaging—biodegradable PET bottles enhanced with additives for faster breakdown in landfills. Independent testing showed 60.6% degradation in just over a year.

The brand is also expanding its product line in 2025, focusing on textured hair and introducing wearable antioxidant-infused hair care.

Now an employee-owned company, Malibu C remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and education. The brand’s success stems from its innovative approach to neutralizing oxidation using gentle, food-grade ingredients like vitamin C. Looking ahead, CEO Loretta Mottram outlines plans for a new line for textured hair, wearable hair care solutions, and a continued focus on eco-friendly practices and personalized routines. For Porter, the most meaningful aspect of his work has been solving problems for people globally and revolutionizing the beauty industry through education, a commitment that continues with their Malibu MetaVersity. As Tom Porter steps into retirement, the brand looks to the future with optimism, knowing its foundation is stronger than ever. Its mission endures: solving real problems with science-backed, vitamin C-powered solutions.
