The number of skincare cases has been rapidly increasing in the UK, reaching 21,000 new cases annually. There has been a 31% increase in these cases over the last decade. As per Melanoma UK statistics, skin cancer is the fifth most common cancer. However, 86% of the cases are preventable.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Beauty and Wellbeing, a UK group of MPs has now launched an inquiry questioning the UV safety in beauty products.

The group is asking for written evidence from different beauty experts and stakeholders in the health sector as the incidents of skin cancer are on the rise in the country. The British Beauty Council states that 57% of consumers in the UK feel that sunscreen is expensive, while 29% said that they would consider applying sunscreen if it were less expensive. The inquiry will offer recommendations after its findings in Spring 2026.
The main focus areas will be UV safety, being a basic requirement, and how it is needed all through the year. It will also give suggestions on the accessibility and affordability of UV safety and how will this change in approach reduce the cases and burden on NHS. It will also give recommendations on ways to make people aware about UV safety.

According to MP Harris, the chairman of the inquiry, healthcare and beauty industry advocates have, for several years, been working on initiatives to make people aware of the damaging effects of UV exposure without using sunscreen. With the APPG effort, this initiative will get the required boost.
They will offer recommendations to the Government through this inquiry. Harris added that by 2038 the number of melanoma cases are expected to reach 26,500. There is very little awareness about SPF and its usage with only 35% people understanding the meaning of SPF and the other 65% people exposing their skin to the sun without knowing its harmful impact. Thus, this inquiry is critical and will help garner government and industry support to help the public.
