East India has taken the lead in cosmetics sales in India accounting for more than one third of sales in FY 2024 as the usage of makeup is much more in this part of the country than others. Thus, brands like Colorbar find it to be a more lucrative zone for new launches and product innovation.

According to Samir K Modi, managing director, Modi Enterprises, which sells Colorbar brand, on an average a consumer uses more makeup in the east and unlike other regions, here people like to experiment with more shades, including the darker ones which are not sold much anywhere else. K Ramakrishnan, managing director, South Asia, Worldpanel Division, Kantar added that East has the highest penetration in all segments of the cosmetics market including, lip, nail, face, and eye with the Southern zone following suite.

In its latest report, Global consumer researcher, Kantar stated that in the last one year more than 186 million pieces of makeup were sold in the top 10 cities of India. Within the cosmetics market, lipsticks were the highest selling product with 65 million units sold in a year, creating a revenue of about Rs 1,700 crore in FY 2024. Face and lip cosmetics together generated Rs 2,900 crores, accounting for about 70% of industry value while nail cosmetics generated about Rs 350 crore with 47 million pieces being sold. On the other hand eye products accounted for the smallest share in terms of units sold, amounting to 34 million.
