Michelin has launched its inaugural Hotel Wellness Award, celebrating hotels that elevate wellbeing into a truly immersive experience. The winner—dubbed the Michelin Key equivalent of the star rating in gastronomy—will be revealed on 8 October at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

More than just spas and gyms, the nominees have been selected for creating holistic wellness retreats that promote both physical and mental regeneration. From sound healing and herbology to thermal baths and bespoke health programmes, guests are invited to stay wholly within the property for curated journeys of rejuvenation.

The shortlist features five distinguished properties from around the world:

Canyon Ranch (Arizona, USA): A wellness trailblazer since 1970, the resort is recognised for its fusion of scientific and alternative healing offerings and its custom-made wellness regimes.

Joali Being (Raa Atoll, Maldives): A private island resort opened in 2021, noted for its inventive wellness installations—herbology, hydrotherapy, sound healing—and an emphasis on recovery and serenity.

Lily of the Valley (La Croix-Valmer, France): This French Riviera retreat combines a low-calorie, health-oriented philosophy with indulgence—think high-tech treatments, individual coaching, watersports, two heated pools, plus fine dining by renowned chefs.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon (Grindavík, Iceland): Set against dramatic landscapes, this sanctuary offers access to iconic geothermal waters, steamrooms, and subterranean spa chambers, all powered by Iceland’s clean energy.

Bürgenstock Resort (Switzerland): Imperial-heritage alpine luxury, offering sweeping views over Lake Lucerne, a 10,000 m² spa, cryotherapy, infrared saunas, and modern wellness features post-renovation.

This award is just one of four new categories Michelin is introducing: alongside Wellness, new accolades will also recognize outstanding Architecture & Design, authentic Local Gateway experiences, and the most promising Opening of the Year hotels.

With this step, Michelin signals that wellness is no longer a fringe luxury, but a core component of hospitality—where the entire stay becomes a crafted, restorative journey.
