From keeping track of trends to continuous education and hands-on training for their teams, educators help in enhancing consumers’ salon experience

The hair industry is constantly undergoing a transformation process. From haircutting and colouring to hairstyling, the trends keep changing. In such a scenario it becomes imperative for hairdressers to keep themselves constantly updated. This stands true for hair salon educators as well as their staff..
Updating one’s skillset is essential so as to keep clients satisfied. At a hair academy, trainees are taught to be creative and stay updated with the styles that are in trend. At the same time, they also learn to cater to the different clients’ requirements.
Salon educators keep themselves and their staff updated in different ways. Najeeb ur Rehman, Creative Director, Streax Professional and Founder – Najeeb’s academy and Canvas salon feels, As an educator, it is extremely important to constantly stay connected with the evolution of the global hair and fashion industry.

“I regularly follow international hair trends, editorials, fashion movements, and the work of various artists across major fashion capitals like London, Paris, Milan, and New York City. I also remain in constant touch with many of my colleagues and fellow session stylists in India and abroad who are actively involved in backstage work for leading fashion designers. Those interactions help me understand not only upcoming trends, but also the direction in which fashion and beauty are evolving globally.”
Continuous hands on training on the floor exposure a must
Hands-on work on the shop floor exposes the educator to direct feedback from clients and helps them understand the difference between trends that are practical, wearable, and commercially successful and which ones may remain mere editorial concepts.
The real balance comes from combining global exposure with real salon experience — because ultimately trends become meaningful only when they connect with real clients and their lifestyles.
At a salon academy, stylists are exposed to training not only from the academy but also through all the brand educators associated with the salon. Every season, every year, something new enters the industry — whether it is trends, products, technologies, formulations, or client expectations — and the staff must stay aware of all these developments to remain relevant and confident.
Najeeb ur Rehman explains, “I strongly believe education should never stop in a salon environment. Continuous learning keeps the team motivated, creative, and professionally sharp. The best learning happens when educators and staff work side by side on real practical sessions rather than only theory-based demonstrations. When staff physically perform techniques under guidance, they understand faster, gain confidence, and are able to implement the learning immediately on the salon floor. The practical exposure is what truly transforms training into performance and eventually into better client satisfaction and stronger salon growth.”
Continuous learning ensures student stylists never feel left behind and feel they are ahead of the curve as far as hair styling trends are concerned.
Knowledge of trends = upgraded salon experience
Understanding of trends, products, new techniques etc. not only improves their styling skills or haircuts but also enhances the overall salon experience. It also makes them more confident in recommending the right services, communicating with clients, and delivering better results.
Regular salon services like hair colour, hair spa, hair treatments, beauty services, and makeup consultations automatically become more refined and professional. When clients can feel that their hairdresser has very good knowledge, technique, and confidence, their trust in the salon grows. They become more satisfied, more loyal, and more regular with the salon.
“In today’s highly competitive market, continuous education is not a luxury anymore — it is one of the biggest tools to retain clients, upgrade service standards, and grow the salon business consistently,” adds Najeeb ur Rehman.

Keep the academy staff motivated and challenges faced
According to Najee bur Rehman, “One of the biggest challenges in the industry is that many salon professionals may not come from a very strong academic background. Because of that, I believe a trainer first needs to understand the learner before expecting the learner to understand the training. Education in our industry should be simplified, practical, relatable, and easy to absorb so that the maximum number of people can truly benefit from it. The moment training becomes too technical or intimidating, people disconnect.”
Encouraging the staff to get trained is as important as the training method itself. Creating a comfortable environment, motivating them, and explaining concepts in their local language makes a huge difference. It opens them up, builds confidence, and makes learning feel achievable rather than difficult. A good trainer doesn’t just teach techniques — they make people believe that they are capable of learning and growing.
The salon educators prepare student hairstylists for a better future.
