The European Union has officially banned trimethyl benzoyl diphenyl phosphine oxide (TPO), a common ingredient in gel nail polishes, effective September 1, 2025. Classified as a CMR 1B substance (potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction), TPO was widely used as a photoinitiator to harden gel products under UV/LED lamps and deliver their signature high-gloss finish.

Under Regulation (EU) 2025/877, the ban prohibits both sales of TPO-containing nail products and their professional use in salons. This immediate phase-out requires manufacturers and beauty professionals in the EU to shift to safer alternatives.

For India’s beauty industry, the development signals more than a regional compliance change—it is a global supply chain disruptor. Indian OEMs and private-label manufacturers exporting gel nail products to Europe will now need to reformulate offerings, while domestic salon chains sourcing international brands could soon see reformulated versions in circulation.

Notably, several leading brands have already rolled out TPO-free systems, including OPI’s Intelli-Gel™ and Manucurist’s “green” gel lines. Industry observers suggest that global majors may standardize formulations across markets to ensure compliance, setting a new benchmark in nail product safety.

Although Indian regulators have not yet flagged TPO, the EU’s move could influence safety standards in other regions. With Indian consumers increasingly aware of “clean beauty” labels, salon professionals and suppliers would be wise to track ingredient lists, invest in compliant alternatives, and proactively align with emerging global norms.
